General Political Discussion - Forced to live on £2 a day: Families' daily food b

Struggling families have cut food bills to £2 per person a day as they choose heating over eating, a charity claims.

They are also raiding savings – even their children’s – and racking up debts in a battle to put meals on the table.

Charity Family Action surveyed families across the country and found that fruit and veg are being axed from the weekly shop as parents opt to pay for heating instead.

Blaming rising prices and the Tory-led Coalition’s cuts, Family Action chief executive Helen Dent said: “The Chancellor is cashing in at children’s expense. Family fortunes are hitting rock bottom as parents and children are battered by food and fuel inflation and welfare and tax credit cuts.

“Fatalism has set in and many parents can see no hope in the future – with many unable to save for their children’s future. Austerity is breaking the bank for many families.”

Among the most worrying findings were mums who have abandoned eating fruit because of the price and one young woman who has cancelled saving and now spends all of her child benefit on nappies.

The report follows a survey by consumer watchdog Which? that showed one in four Britons are now dipping into their savings to buy food because they are so poor.

The Which? poll found 20% of people were in debt to credit card companies because they cannot find the cash to put food on the table. And 29% of families – nearly one in three – have cancelled holidays because they can’t afford to take them.

Only 61% of those who took part in the survey said they were satisfied with their lives – compared to 71% five years ago when Britain was relatively prosperous. Which? said that more people were shopping around for bargains, buying second-hand clothes and switching their energy supplier.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/forced-to-live-on-2-a-day-families-751565

Is Government policy harming family life in the UK?

General Political Discussion - Lowering the voting age

Yes. As Alan says: pay taxes, get a vote.

Just as an addition in partial response to David Mackintosh: political education should be included in schooling, regardless of whether the voting age is lowered or not.

Mark

Danny Ralph
‎@william macdonald just been listening to jeremy vine on rad 2, abu qatada really is a nasty piece of work. i cant believe you consider it narrow minded to want supporters of islamic terrorism prosecuted and even to bring the nazi's into play. you are obviously trolling and i fell for it. your arguement contradicts itself by implying that only extremists would want other extremists to be tried and imprisoned. @mark caudery you should be relieved that people like steve mullan are around, he spent a long time peace keeping in bosnia, protecting muslims from being murdered by extremists, not to mention helping liberate iraq where more than 4 million people were killed by their own leader. or in afghan where extremists are still plotting outrages against the free world and selling heroin which corrupts and destroys our youth. i am proud to call steve a friend.
Alex Wasyliw
Given what is said here about the info given out by the government, and how it is reported by the likes of the Daily Fail... I'd say it's pretty clear where the most blame lies.

http://fullfact.org/blog/Daily_Mail_correction_fit_for_work-3289

Alex Wasyliw
Much as I'm angry that this government is making changes before sorting out the terrible ATOS/assessment problems (although I'm pleased to see the plans are in place to address this, but they should wait until those are acyually done before any changes that rely on the assessment procedure are brought in), I'm just as angry at the last government for failing to sort it out, and for actually engaging ATOS in the first place with no safeguards in place or any performance indicators linked to accuracy of assessment and appeal rate... it's a shocking oversight, but with their obsession with stats and procedures I can't honestly say I'm surprised.

Miguel Sousa
Just out of interest, why is a poor guy in a wheelchair (as an example) to blame for Government cuts in benefits generally as way of bringing National Budgets back in order?

These cuts, as tasteless as they are, are a necessary evil in this day and age.

Ion Rex Griffis
Yes they are the government and them media creating scapegoats and a witch hunt not unlike the paranoia over child molesters in our current culture.

Hi guys I would just like to bring your attention to a new party/movement on the scene and would like your feedback. It's called the Workers People's Party aka The National Integralist Movement and the website is located at: http://www.twpp.org.uk

I know the site is not perfect as well as probably the structure of the information within the site but what I am looking for is only constructive criticism not silly remarks.

Thanks.
